Our 2045 1 bn Challenge
Challenge Layer
These are not commitments that Green Cross UK assumes or purports to undertake, and nothing in this site shall be construed as creating legally binding obligations, whether contractual or otherwise, on the part of Green Cross UK or any partner organisation.
They are, instead, a declaration of the scale of change we collectively recognise as necessary — and a shared framework for how we intend to contribute to this challenge, alongside governments, investors, corporations, and communities that choose to act in concert.
We do not and would not claim sole ownership of these outcomes. Our role is to facilitate, convene, integrate, verify, and/or report — as the context requires and as capacity allows — not to guarantee results that depend fundamentally on collective action.
Our own modelling indicates that Aneya and Lazarus — two initiatives currently in execution — could, at full scale, generate outcomes that, by themselves, would exceed these figures. This is not, and shall not be treated as, a guarantee of future performance. These programmes and initiatives are evolutionary in nature and remain subject to a range of external conditions, including but not limited to political, financial, environmental, and regulatory factors beyond our reasonable control.
Accordingly, cooperation and collaboration are not merely desirable — they are essential. We do not aspire to reach these milestones alone. We aspire to reach them together. And we commit to making the maximum reasonable effort, in good faith and with transparency, to mobilise the partnerships necessary to turn these aspirations into verified outcomes.
This is not our target to claim. It is our invitation to act.
An Aspiration That Demands Collective Action
1 Billion Hectares of Ecosystem Restoration Restoring degraded forests, grasslands, wetlands, and agricultural land through programmes and initiatives — whether our own or from third parties. Indicative milestones: 200M ha (2030) | 500M ha (2035) | 800M ha (2040)
1 Billion Tonnes CO₂eq Addressed A meaningful contribution — approximately 2.5% of current annual global emissions — through programmes and initiatives, whether our own or from third parties. Indicative milestones: 150M tonnes (2030) | 400M tonnes (2035) | 700M tonnes (2040)
£1 Billion Mobilised for Nature Channelling institutional capital toward nature-positive outcomes through blended finance, Biodiversity Restoration Assets (ARBs), green bond facilitation, and sustainable assets, among others. Indicative milestones: £150M (2030) | £400M (2035) | £700M (2040)
These milestones are directional indicators of collective progress, not performance commitments by Green Cross UK. They will be recalculated if material changes in science, methodology, or recognised standards require it.
Three Interconnected Targets
How We Contribute
We facilitate these targets through programme frameworks, strategic partnerships with governments, investors, and communities, independent verification, and transparent annual reporting.
Where Green Cross UK acts in a verification capacity, it does so by coordinating or commissioning accredited third-party auditors — not by self-certifying outcomes.
Green Cross UK does not guarantee the performance of third-party verifiers, but selects them based on recognised accreditation and maintains transparency about their identity and methodology.
Navigating Complexity
Sustainability involves dynamic, evolving systems. Solutions adapt as conditions shift, methodologies improve, and strategies mature. Pathways may change — but our commitment to confront these challenges with rigour, transparency, and accountability does not. We promise honest adaptation, not perfect foresight.
If progress against these targets falls materially short, Green Cross UK will say so publicly — in annual reporting, with explanation of causes and a revised pathway. We will not withdraw published reports. We will not reframe failure as success. If a programme is discontinued, we will document why. Honest accounting of what did not work is as important to us as recording what did.
Independent Verification — Programmes are designed for third-party MRV by accredited auditors where applicable. We use blockchain technology to enable transparent, tamper-resistant records. Green Cross UK coordinates this process; it does not self-verify.
Transparent Reporting — Annual public reporting details progress, methodologies, and verified outcomes — including shortfalls, delays, and gaps. Indicators and metrics may be recalculated retroactively where science or recognised standards change materially; any such recalculation will be documented and explained.
Separation of Roles — We typically act as facilitator and verifier, not project owner. Where appropriate, capital is managed independently to prevent conflicts of interest. Partners engaging Green Cross UK should seek their own legal advice regarding any contractual obligations arising from programme participation.
Alignment with Standards — Our work aligns with recognised frameworks including GRI, TNFD, Verra VCS, and Gold Standard, applied based on project requirements.
Honest Communication — We don't claim credits without certification pathways. We don't report restoration without baseline documentation. When rigorous measurement isn't yet possible, we say so.
These aren't our targets to claim — they're milestones we help the ecosystem achieve. If we reach them, it will be because partners chose to act. We measure the movement; we don't own the outcome.
Success is collective. Verification is independent. Integrity is our commitment.
